The Macao and Canada Economic and Trade Association (MCETA) held its annual board meeting on June 1, 2024, at 9:00 am Toronto time. The meeting discussed and approved the new main leadership positions of the board, the relocation of the association's office, and the annual work report.
The meeting was chaired by Henry Chan. First, the meeting passed a resolution to appoint Carmen Lei as Board President , Kaidong He and Henry Chan as Vice President , Stanley Chan as CFO, and Gary Chan as CEO.
Next, the meeting passed the relocation of the association's office to Unit 9-421 Bentley Street, Markham, Ontario, Canada L3T 9T2, which would provide facilities for video shooting and production, enabling enhanced promotional activities for Chinese and Canadian enterprises in the future.
Then, Henry Chan presented the annual report for 2023. The report highlighted the association's activities and achievements throughout the year. In May 2023, the chamber organized a delegation to Guangdong-Macao in-depth cooperation zone in Hengqin to explore investment opportunities in the Greater Bay Area. The delegation received full support and guidance from representatives of the local Economic and Development Bureau. They visited the Guangdong-Macao in-depth cooperation zone in Hengqin Exhibition Hall and engaged in discussions on finance, exhibitions, culture and creativity, and education. They also visited the Xiangzhou Bu Culture Yuanjie, a major cultural and creative project in Guangdong Province, and the Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park of Co-operation between Guangdong and Macao, a significant innovation hub in the Greater Bay Area. The delegation concluded their visit at the Hengqin Innovalley, where they observed the achievements of young entrepreneurs and the current human resources situation. MCETA will continue to promote economic development in the Greater Bay Area, attract investment, and contribute to the diversification of Macao's economy.
In October 2023, MCETA participated in the Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF) for the ninth consecutive year. The fair served as a platform for economic, trade, educational, tourism, and cultural exchanges, promoting investment opportunities in Macao and the Greater Bay Area. During the fair, MCETA showcased high-tech and healthcare products and facilitated business matching between multinational institutions and entrepreneurs from mainland China and Canada, including inviting Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Macao and other companies to join together. Ms. Janet MacPhee, the Deputy Consul General of the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong and Macau, also attended.
At the end of December 2023, Henry Chan, the Executive Vice Chairman of Macao and Canada Economic and Trade Association (China Macao), visited the Toronto Hong Kong Lions Club. He received a warm reception from the incoming President, Gary Chan, and the Lions Club members. During the visit, they discussed development opportunities and engaged with influential local entrepreneurs. Henry Chan also had the opportunity to meet with technology experts from Silicon Valley through Gary Chan's connections. The aim was to create more opportunities for investors and overseas tech talents to cooperate and attract high-tech talents and investors to the Guangdong-Macao in-depth cooperation zone in Hengqin, promoting development and sharing business opportunities.
Currently, the global economy is still in the recovery phase after the pandemic, and every industry needs new driving forces for progress. There are opportunities as well as challenges. Chairman Carmen Lei expressed the hope that member entrepreneurs would mobilize their respective industries and achieve more effective business collaborations through the platform of the chamber.
Kaidong He suggested that with the easing of travel restrictions after the pandemic, the association should organize more exchange visits and activities for entrepreneurs. New ideas and business opportunities often arise from communication and collisions, which have always been our goal.
At the end of November 2023, under the sponsorship and organization of President Carmen Lei, MCETA launched free online English training for its members to improve their language skills ,for enhancing the international trade and culture communication abilities.
After then, Stanley Chan presented the financial status for 2023.
Lastly, the meeting discussed establishing an optimized membership mechanism to facilitate better collaboration and opportunities among member companies. The aim was to provide a better platform and more business opportunities. Mr. Henry Chan announced the meeting concluded successfully.
